Village@Parap is an innovative housing development combining public, affordable and private housing in one of Darwin’s most desirable suburbs. MasterPlan worked with project leader and Territory building company Sitzler, as well as Brisbane architects Deicke Richards, communications experts Michels Warren Munday, engineering firm Cardno, and agents LJ Hooker and Knight Frank, to deliver a residential project that will be the first of its kind in the Territory.
MasterPlan was instrumental in preparing application documents and guiding the approvals process in a timely manner, to enable the client to meet the strict timelines set by the project partner, the Northern Territory Department of Construction and Infrastructure. MasterPlan continues to provide advice on the various amendments and clearances required.
The development replaces the ageing Wirrina public housing estate, and aims to integrate various forms of housing to eliminate the social and behavioural issues that have long been associated with the site. Completed in mid-2012, the works provide 100 units with extensive landscaping and open space, and an emphasis on connection between the public and private realms.
The development comprises:
• 100 one, two and three bedroom apartments comprising a mix of private units (for sale or lease), public housing for seniors accommodation and social housing units to be leased and managed by the Territory’s affordable housing rental company, Venture Housing;
• Innovative tropical housing design, including large louvred balconies, open plan layout that blends indoor and outdoor living, and site positioning responsive to the tropical elements, such as maximising access to cooling breezes;
• Extensive communal open space and shared facilities; and
• A location in one of Darwin’s most sought-after residential areas, close to schools, shops, restaurants and hotels and, of course, the famous Parap Markets.
