Description:

MasterPlan supported the Commonwealth Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR) with a significant remediation project at Maralinga, located approximately 350 kilometres north-west of Ceduna, South Australia. This area was used by the British Government in the 1950’s and 1960’s for nuclear weapons testing. While the Commonwealth Government safely remediated the land of radiological materials in the 1990’s, non-radiological general waste remains in numerous debris pits across the area. Over time, these pits have deteriorated, necessitating remediation.

The Commonwealth Government through DISR is working closely with the Traditional Owners of the land, Maralinga Tjarutja to remediate this waste.

MasterPlan assisted DISR in obtaining planning consent from the State Planning Commission, South Australia, for key elements of the project. This included the establishment of a waste recovery facility for collecting and sorting waste, and a landfill for the secure burial of inert non-recyclable waste.

The project aims to remediate and remove over 11,800 cubic metres of non-radiological waste from Maralinga, including over 8,000 cubic metres of material for recycling.
