The Osmond / Hungarian Club

Location:

Osmond Terrace, Norwood, South Australia

Client:

Sarah Constructions / Hungarian Club of South Australia

Sector:

Residential

Role:

Statutory and Land Use Planning

Description:

The Hungarian Club of SA has a rich cultural history at its Osmond Terrace site in Norwood, which it has owned and occupied for over 60 years, serving as a hub for a wide range of social and community activities. Recognising the need to modernise its ageing facilities, the Club partnered with Sarah Constructions to realise the development potential of the site. This partnership ensured the economic viability of this important community asset while delivering a luxury residential development well-suited to its location.

The completed project involved the demolition of the former community facility and the construction of a six-storey mixed-use building. The development features 23 high-end apartments on the upper levels and a purpose-built, modern community facility on the ground floor to replace the original Hungarian Club of SA.

Designed by ACG Studio, the project seamlessly blends the residential and community uses. The design achieves a clear distinction between the ground-level podium, the residential apartments above, and the recessed penthouse level incorporating the use of strategic setbacks, contrasting materials, and varied colours. The revamped Hungarian Club facility provides a vibrant, high-quality venue with strong connection to the public realm that continues to play a central role in Norwood’s lively cultural and social life.

MasterPlan played a crucial role in the project, guiding the client through the Pre-Lodgement Panel (PLP) and Design Review Panel (DRP) processes, and into the planning assessment facilitated by the State Planning Commission. After planning consent was granted, MasterPlan continued to support the project through design development variations, ensuring the successful delivery of this transformative project.
