A landmark project for South Australia’s rapidly evolving renewable energy sector.

Powering South Australia’s renewable energy future.

MasterPlan is proud to have played a key role in securing an Associated Infrastructure Licence (AIL) for AMPYR Australia’s Northern Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Port Paterson — a landmark project for South Australia’s rapidly evolving renewable energy sector.

With capacity of up to 270 MW and 1,145 MWh of registered capacity, the Northern Battery will provide significant energy storage infrastructure to support the State’s transition towards 100% net renewable energy and its broader net-zero ambitions.

The approval is also a significant industry milestone, representing the first start-to-finish AIL granted by South Australia’s Department for Energy and Mining under the Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Act 2023.

MasterPlan brought together its planning, environmental and stakeholder engagement expertise to help guide the project through this new and complex approvals pathway. Our team prepared the AIL application, Consultation Strategy and Summary, Environmental Impact Report and Statement of Environmental Objectives, delivering a comprehensive approvals package that addressed the key environmental, planning and stakeholder considerations associated with infrastructure of this scale.

Working collaboratively with AMPYR Australia, Green Gold Energy, the Department for Energy and Mining, Port Augusta City Council and other key government stakeholders, MasterPlan successfully navigated a relatively untested licensing framework to help turn an ambitious renewable energy project into an approved development.

Complex projects. New approval pathways. Landmark outcomes.

The Northern Battery demonstrates the value of bringing the right planning, environmental and engagement expertise to major energy projects from the outset — and we’re excited to continue helping shape the infrastructure that will power South Australia’s future.
