The Twin Creek Wind Farm and Energy Storage Project is a major renewable energy development located in South Australia’s Mid North. The project comprises a 185 MW wind farm featuring 51 wind turbines, together with up to 215 MW of battery energy storage, supporting the transition to a more reliable and sustainable energy network.
The project is located between the townships of Kapunda, Eudunda and Truro, with a proposed 15-kilometre overhead transmission line connecting the wind farm to the Robertstown–Tungkillo 275 kV transmission network east of Truro.
MasterPlan was engaged to lead the planning approval process, undertaking the planning assessment, preparing the development application, and coordinating the project’s progression through assessment by the State Commission Assessment Panel.
The planning process presented a number of significant challenges, including the project’s location across three separate local government areas, the scale and complexity of the proposal, and the extensive technical investigations required to support the application. Acting as project manager for the planning approvals process, MasterPlan coordinated a multidisciplinary team of specialist consultants across environmental, aviation, landscape and visual impact, traffic, civil engineering, acoustics and electromagnetic interference disciplines.
In addition to addressing complex planning, design and interface issues, the project required careful consideration of legal and policy matters relating to development categorisation, dwelling setbacks and associated development. Working closely with RES, one of the world’s leading independent renewable energy developers, and an experienced team of technical specialists, MasterPlan successfully navigated the planning process and addressed the wide range of issues raised throughout the assessment.
The Twin Creek Wind Farm and Energy Storage Project demonstrates MasterPlan’s capability in managing large-scale, technically complex infrastructure projects and delivering planning outcomes for nationally significant renewable energy developments.
